Book Club Review: I’m Glad My Mom Died

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This book was selected by the Book Club I’ve joined. The theme of the month (March) was “mothers”. Each month, a poll is created with chosen books relating to the theme - and a winner is selected from there. I will be going to a book discussion relating to this read on 04/04/2025.
Firstly, I’d like to say that whether you’re familiar with Jennette McCurdy or not, this is an important read (I did grow up watching her on iCarly, so was aware of her role within the show). It delves into the insight of someone from childhood, through to adulthood, that is in the limelight and growing up within the public-eye.
It also addresses a number of other issues both related to being a child star, and not. Be warned - despite the bright colours on the cover, and the reviews stating it’s “hilarious”; this is a candid and to-the-point memoir.
Jennette's writing style is easy to read, entertaining, and witty. However, the topics she discusses within the book are in no-way ‘funny’ or easy-reading. You can feel the pain she feels throughout the book, and she writes about serious topics in a way that is easy to understand as a reader; she does well in slightly altering language throughout the book to represent her age at the time.
I would highly advise looking at a trigger warnings list if you plan to read this book, especially if you do not know anything about it beforehand.
Despite the serious, and sometimes depressing, topics discussed in the book - it was enjoyable to read. Jennette’s writing feels as though she is speaking to the reader herself, the topics are addressed in a truthful way (which people may think is blunt), but this is her experience - and this is cemented by how she writes the memoir.
By the end of the book - I’ll say I’m glad Jennette’s mom died, too. I truly hope she is feeling more at-ease with her career and other elements of her life now.
All-in-all, a well-written book that presents itself with unreserved honesty.
